Lessons

We currently run a free lesson program for the general public. Classes are given by our NFAA-certified instructors, and are appropriate for ages ten years old and older. Classes cover an introduction to the use of the traditional recurve bow, with emphasis on range safety and on learning how to hold, draw, aim, and shoot a successful archery shot.

All equipment and supplies are provided by KMA. Particulars are described further below.

  • Classes are held in two sessions--one morning and one afternoon (March thru October).
  • Classes are mixed adult/child, last for about two hours, and are free.
  • All equipment is provided.
  • Class size is limited to 18 participants per session.
  • Each participant must be pre-registered by name and party count.
  • Each participant is required to sign a registration and safety waiver. Minor children must have this waiver signed by their parent or guardian. In addition, minor children must be accompanied by their parent or guardian in accordance with our liability insurance carrier.
  • Participants must be at least ten years old.
  • Participants must wear closed-toe foot ware: no sandals, flip-flops, or bare feet. Hiking or walking shoes are highly recommended. We also recommend dressing for the weather--minus about 20 degrees or so.
  • Long hair must be tied back.
  • ADA access--Field archery is an outdoor sport conceived to be practiced in as close to natural a setting as possible; as such, our classes are taught on a flat dirt surface with access by a steep walkway largely unsuitable for wheelchairs.
  • Plan to arrive on time. The range entrance is on the upper part of King's Mountain Road and subject to weekend bicycle traffic so either come early or approach by way of Skyline Boulevard (although expect beach traffic on CA-92 on nice days). Arriving after the start of class can result in having to reschedule you for a class on a different date. Discretion is left up to the senior instructor on site.
  • Disruptive behavior is counter-productive to the rest of the participants: unruly students will be asked to sit out the rest of the class.

If you would be interested in attending one of our classes,

  1. Select a class and fill out its signup form at this SignUp Genius page (signups are enabled for up to two months in advance).
  2. Print and fill out the consent and waiver form, and bring it with you to your lesson to help speed up our required paperwork.

Drop-ins are accommodated on a first-come, first-served basis *after* registered students have been checked-in, up to the class size limit. As for the registered students, such prospective students should have their paperwork in-hand.

Private lessons--groups or individual:

KMA is not staffed to provide private lessons, however our program director can refer you to indoor ranges located in Daly City, Palo Alto, Newark or Gilroy which can accommodate private groups or individual lessons, corporate events or birthday parties on a fee-basis. Email our lesson coordinator at lessons@kingsmountainarchers.org for additional information.

Afterward

Once you've learned the safety & basics of shooting a bow & arrow, and you find that you want to go further, please consider joining KMA. Club members have access to entry-level, club-owned bows available for use while visiting the range (bring your own arrows and safety equipment).

Many of our members will gladly provide on the spot advice on equipment and shooting techniques or can direct you to the proper resource to help you out.

Whether you decide to join us or not, thank you for participating in the KMA free lesson program.
