Lessons

We currently run two lesson programs--one for the general public, and one for private groups (eg. birthday parties, corporate team-building events, etc.). Classes in both programs are given by our NFAA-certified instructors, and are appropriate for ages about 8 years on up. Classes cover an introduction to the use of the traditional recurve bow, with emphasis on range safety and on learning how to hold, draw, aim, and shoot a successful archery shot. All equipment and supplies are provided by KMA. Particulars for each program are described further below.

  • "General public" program: classes are mixed adult/child, last for about two hours, and are free.
  • "Private groups" program: classes are scheduled on an as-needed basis, last 2-4 hours depending on the activity type (about two for parties; up to four for corporate events), and have activities tailored for your specific group--email our lesson coordinator at lessons@kingsmountainarchers.org for additional information.
  • Scouts: not an official program, but we've arranged with various scouting groups in the past to provide instruction toward earning merit badges, etc.

If you would be interested in attending one of the "general public" classes, fill out and submit this online registration form. Please also print and fill out the consent and waiver form, and bring it with you to your lesson to help speed up our required paperwork. Drop-ins are accommodated on an "equipment-available" basis (after registered shooters have been outfitted), and are first-come, first-served.

If you'd like to schedule a private group session (scouts included), please email us at lessons@kingsmountainarchers.org and our lesson coordinator will contact you.

Class attendees should plan to dress for the weather at the range on the day of their class--sweater/sweat-shirt, coat, hat, and walking/hiking shoes (shorts on hot days, but bring the sweat-shirt, too, just in case). You may bring food. Water is available at the picnic area. Restrooms are available. Parking is available inside the gate; park at the picnic area.

Attendees also must arrive on time: anyone arriving more than 15 minutes late will not be allowed to join the class because the instructors aren't able to "catch you up" as class proceeds.

Afterward

Once you've learned the safety & basics of shooting a bow & arrow, and you find that you want to go further, please consider joining KMA. We now have a Certified Advanced Level Archery Instructor on our roster, available on an individual basis to assist members in improving their archery skills! But whether or not you decide to join us, we will gladly provide expert advice on purchasing equipment and where to find more information about archery.
